Hume, formerly known as Law Dogger, is an attorney and the litigation partner of his law firm. A traditionalist at heart, he travels often in an attempt to expose himself to as many cultures across the globe as possible. His column runs every so often and he can be found on Twitter as well. That, or a variation of that conclusory statement, is what various girls told me after hearing I was going to Russia for an extended period of time. My sister told me to be careful because they are evil girls. A female friend of mine from a Western European country stated to me that they are all whores and prostitutes. Even the girls I dated in Ukraine would tell me how horrible Russian girls are. So were they right?

Forget rack rates and corporate rates. Kuala Lumpur is a bopping town with something approaching a sidewalk cafe culture, this despite the heat, the rain and exhaust fumes. At Bukit Bintang “sheesha” hubble-bubble stalls have proliferated offering flavoured puffs, Lebanese tidbits and chill-out music. The heat can be beat with the giant cooling fans that spray a fog of wet mist over diners. Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand were key stop-offs for traders, and have all been painstakingly restored to their former glory — think glittering minarets, voluptuous domes and hypnotic mosaics. Oct 19, at Khiva at dawn, with only swallows for company Credit: It was founded in the 6th century, and thrived as a Silk Road trading city — with increasingly ornate mosques, mausoleums and madrassas religious schools added to its labyrinth of streets, all of which have been artfully restored.
But after 5pm, the local tourists head home — leaving you to explore the city in peace. Wander its streets while swallows swoop in the fading light, its mud brick walls rosy under a pinky sky. The novelty of seeing a bride posing in full white gown regalia beneath a technicolour 10th-century minaret never wears off. Statue of Timur in Tashkent Credit: His armies killed an estimated 17 million people on their rampage across central Asia, and he married a descendent of Genghis Khan who had also overthrown Uzbekistan in the 13th century.

Kuala Lumpur is a can-do city on the move. Once notorious for its gridlocked traffic, cars and people move too these days, thanks to some well-planned elevated motorways and light rail options. New highways snake in from the international airport.
Filed under Pagadian City The Philippines, being a country archipelago of islands and seas, have naturally wonderful beaches, some of which are famous the world over. Beaches like Puerto Galera, Boracay, and the various beaches in Cebu rake in tourists from around the world all year round because of their pristine and cool blue waters and fine, white-sand shores.
However, if one will just look around more, they will find that there are other less-known but equally beautiful beach spots in other parts of the Philippines. In Pagadian, in particular, there are beaches and islands that will make one believe that there is such a thing as a secluded paradise on Earth. A nice place to start would be the Dao-Dao Islands some seven to ten minutes away from the seaport, when riding a motorboat.
It is a rather big island, with an area size of about 1. The coral reefs are artificially made, but the whole place is very much ideal for swimming, fishing, and boating. During low tides, a smaller, more undeveloped island appears and like the rest, is also suitable for fishing and swimming. There is also the White Beach that, as its name suggests, is a stretch of white sand beach just minutes southeast of the seaport. Again, it can be reached via motorboat.

This barren place, a site called Gonur, was once the heart of a vast archipelago of settlements that stretched across 1, square miles of Central Asian plains. Early history[ edit ] Tashkent was settled by ancient people as an oasis on the Chirchik River , near the foothills of the West Tian Shan Mountains. In ancient times, this area contained Beitian, probably the summer “capital” of the Kangju confederacy. This tower is said to have marked the midway point between Europe and China. Other scholars, however, disagree with this identification, though it remains one of four most probable sites for the Stone Tower.
The Shahnameh of Ferdowsi also refers to the city as Chach. The principality of Chach had a square citadel built around the 5th to 3rd centuries BC, some 8 kilometres 5. By the 7th century AD, Chach had more than 30 towns and a network of over 50 canals, forming a trade center between the Sogdians and Turkic nomads. In the early 8th century, the region was conquered by Muslim Arabs. Islamic history[ edit ] In the mid-seventh century, the Sasanian Persian Empire collapsed as a result of the Arab Muslim conquest of Persia.
Under the Samanid dynasty — , whose founder Saman Khuda was a Persian Zoroastrian convert to Islam, the city came to be known as Binkath. However, the Arabs retained the old name of Chach for the surrounding region, pronouncing it ash-Shash instead. They are found in city names such as Samarkand , Yarkand , Panjakent , Khujand etc. The modern spelling of “Tashkent” reflects Russian orthography and 20th-century Soviet influence. Mongol conquest and aftermath[ edit ] The city was destroyed by Genghis Khan in and lost much of its population as a result of the Mongols’ destruction of the Khwarezmid Empire in

Namangan Geography Uzbekistan is located in Central Asia, and is not only landlocked, but it is one of two doubly landlocked countries in the world. Uzbekistan does, however, have a border along the Aral Sea. The terrain of Uzbekistan is largely flat deserts, with the eastern mountain ranges, and a fertile valley region. The Qizilqum Desert stretches across much of northern Uzbekistan with lowlands, near the Fergana Valley, with plains covering much of the land.
Through the valley flows the Syr Darya, which empties into the northern Aral Sea. The other important rivers are the Amu Darya and Zarafshan. The Tian Shan mountains traverse southeastern Uzbekistan and the highest point in the country is at Adelunga Toghi, which is 4, meters 14, feet above sea level. Points of Interest Uzbekistan has many sites of interest in its cities, including many mosques, like Masjid-i Juma, the Neighborhood Mosque, and the Namazgah Mosque.
There are also markets with domed architecture, where visitors can find local handicrafts like the traditional caps and figurines. Other points of interest are the bathhouses that were constructed in the 16th century and still in use, and memorials dating back to the 14th century and the rule of Timur.
